Newswise — The Association of American Cancer Institutes (AACI) will present the 2012 AACI Distinguished Public Service Award to U.S. Senator Jerry Moran (R-KS) and U.S. Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL) on October 15, during the 2012 AACI/CCAF Annual Meeting, in Chicago. Sen. Moran is being recognized for his exceptional leadership in promoting cancer research both as a seven-term congressman and in his service on the Senate Appropriations Committee, as a member of the Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services.

Sen. Moran’s support of the lifesaving work of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and AACI’s member institutions was reflected in his lead sponsorship last year of a Senate resolution highlighting the nation’s commitment to cancer research and commemorating the 40th anniversary of the signing of the National Cancer Act. Also last year, Sen. Moran delivered his full support to the University of Kansas Cancer Center’s bid for NCI designation--prestigious recognition for an academic cancer center. The center received the designation in July. In March 2009, after announcing her own battle with breast cancer, Rep. Wasserman Schultz introduced the Education and Awareness Requires Learning Young Act, or EARLY Act (H.R. 1740). The legislation directs the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to develop and implement a national education campaign about the threat breast cancer poses to all young women, and the particular heightened risks of certain ethnic, cultural and racial groups. This bill became law as part of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act in March 2010. AACI and the Cancer Center Administrators Forum (CCAF) jointly formulated the program for the 2012 AACI/CCAF Annual Meeting. The meeting will be held October 14-16 at The Westin Chicago River North, Chicago. More information on the meeting, including the program and electronic registration, is available at AACI’s website, www.aaci-cancer.org. ### Representing 95 of the nation’s premier academic and free-standing cancer research centers, the Association of American Cancer Institutes is dedicated to promoting leading research institutions' efforts to eradicate cancer through a comprehensive and multidisciplinary program of cancer research, treatment, patient care, prevention, education and community outreach.
