She brings to the role experience and insights from a career that spans more than 25 years, including her current position as a critical care nurse practitioner/clinical specialist at Good Samaritan Hospital in Cincinnati. She is a prolific presenter and a past reviewer for AACN Advanced Critical Care.

Sonia Astle, RN, MS, CCRN, CNRN, CCNS, joins the board as a director, serving a three-year term through June 30, 2015. A clinical nurse specialist at Inova Fairfax Hospital, Falls Church, Va., Astle has four decades of clinical experience — including the United States Air Force, from which she retired after 30 years of service — and has been associated with Inova Fairfax Hospital since 1996.
AACN has appointed Sheryl Leary, RN, PhD(c), CCRN, CCNS, PCCN, and Karen McQuillan, RN, MS, CNS-BC, CCRN, CNRN, FAAN, as its representatives to the AACN Certification Corporation board of directors. Each year, two members of the AACN board of directors serve one-year concurrent terms on the AACN Certification Corporation board.
Leary, a clinical nurse specialist for the direct observation unit of the VA San Diego Healthcare System, began her three-year term on the AACN board in 2011 and now serves her second one-year term on the AACN Certification Corporation board. The spouse of a retired Navy officer, she has relocated frequently, acquiring a broad-based clinical background in settings around the United States.
An investigator, author and presenter on issues related to trauma and nursing, McQuillan is a clinical nurse specialist at R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center, University of Maryland Medical Center, Baltimore, and holds a faculty associate position with the University of Maryland School of Nursing, Baltimore.
