Newswise — The American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN) will give the Marguerite Rodgers Kinney Award for a Distinguished Career to Al Lever, MA, FCCP (Hon). He receives this Visionary Leadership Award for contributions to AACN’s mission and vision at the 2010 National Teaching Institute & Critical Care Exposition, Washington, D.C., May 15-20.

Lever is immediate past executive vice president and chief executive officer, American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP), Northbrook, Ill., a key organizational partner of AACN. An honorary fellow of the college, he is also the immediate past officer and trustee of The CHEST Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the ACCP.

Lever’s commitment to collaboration led to development of two interprofessional forums. The Critical Care Collaborative promotes the exchange of ideas about critical care practice and ICU patient care among leaders from medicine, nursing, pharmacy and respiratory therapy. The Critical Care Institute develops topic-specific projects, one of which was treatment of pain in the critically ill, an important and underappreciated issue with implications for all health professions.

Lever’s creativity and vision led to strategic technology development initiatives that expanded ACCP’s key alliances, leveraged resources effectively and created new markets, programs and products. Customization, integration, centralization and business focus helped to achieve these goals.
