Newswise — The American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (ACOEM) has begun distributing new "mini-guides" from its formal clinical guidelines on chronic pain that offer targeted information on fibromyalgia and the use of opioids in chronic pain cases.

The new mini-guides are the second and third electronic excerpt products to be released by ACOEM, following a quick-guide recommendation summary on treatment of low-back conditions that was released last fall. These excerpt-guides are available in electronic format only and provide a lower cost alternative to the full ACOEM guidelines for occupational medicine and other primary care specialists who need access to targeted information. The mini-guides are included with ACOEM's new APG-I on-line portal, which now offers users of ACOEM's guidelines intuitive, user-friendly infrastructure, and high-speed on-line performance.

"For those who need very specific information from our guidelines, the mini-guides are a great alternative," said ACOEM President Robert R. Orford, MD. "They offer the same high-quality, evidence-based medical information users expect, at a reduced price."

ACOEM is in the process of creating mini-guides on a variety of other medical conditions, which will be announced at various times this year. First published in 1997, the revised Occupational Medicine Practice Guidelines has become the leading source in the United States for evidence-based guidelines used by occupational physicians and other health care professionals. ACOEM's guidelines are also used extensively by insurers, employers, attorneys and other individuals and organizations involved in health and safety in the workplace.

ACOEM's guidelines are considered the gold standard in effective treatment of occupational injuries and illnesses, helping to improve or restore the health of workers through identification of the most efficacious treatment strategies to be implemented at the earliest date. They are the only quality evidence-based guidelines that focus returning injured or ill workers to functional life and work within 90 days of an injury or illness.

Individuals may order ACOEM's mini-guides by visiting www.acoem.org or calling 847-818-1800; corporate customers or group accounts may call 800-441-9628.
