WASHINGTON, July 7 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Following is a statement by American Lung Association CEO John R. Garrison on the Florida smokers' lawsuit:

The Florida jury has clearly seen through Big Tobacco's smokescreen. The jurors have confirmed the industry's culpability in the suffering and deaths of Floridians lured into the use of a dangerous, addictive product. The momentum is clearly against Big Tobacco and for public health.

The jury's finding of guilt on so many counts reaffirms the need to make sure the tobacco industry is not given immunity from legal liability for the harm caused by its products. Today's action also should bolster the U.S. Department of Justice effort to sue Big Tobacco to recover millions of Medicare dollars spent treating sick smokers.
