Four-time winner of the National Magazine Awards, IEEE Spectrum has been the flagship publication of the IEEE since 1964. Now, based on member and reader feedback, the magazine has been redesigned and relaunched to meet the challenges of an increasingly competitive information environment.

Susan Hassler, the Editor, and her staff have revamped the content to provide timely, provocative articles that are international in scope. New sections include one for news analysis to allow rapid reporting of events. Major graphic changes, evolved with the assistance of design consultant David Herbick, encompass a new logo, cover, and page layouts for articles and departments.

Among the highlights of the January issue:

o "Optical Networks Carry the Internet" by Michael J. Riezenman: Optical fiber may provide the solution to last-mile transmission of communications.

o "Unhooking Medicine" by Samuel K. Moore: Wireless networking can link patients, physicians, and medical facilities, but the volume of telemetry is crowding the spectrum. Meanwhile, "Detecting a Heartbeat with a Cell Phone" gives new meaning to "listening to your heart."

o "The Car: Just a Web Browser with Tires" by Elizabeth A. Bretz: Will your vehicle be a node in the network? Cars are being equipped with Internet access, emergency assistance service, navigational aids, and traffic reports.

o "Fueling the Internet" by Tekla S. Perry: As more computers and other electronic devices ranging from radios to kitchen stoves come on line, they require electricity--even in "off" mode. There may be a consequent increase in power consumption across the nation and around the world.
