American Academy of Neurology Presents 54th Annual Meeting in Denver:World's largest gathering of neurologists
ST. PAUL, MN -- (March 13, 2002) More than 8,000 neurologists are expected at the American Academy of Neurology's 54th Annual Meeting in Denver, April 13-20.
The very latest research findings on dementia, Parkinson's disease, obesity and stroke, epilepsy, headache, multiple sclerosis, and many other topics of interest to neurologists and neuroscientists will be part of the 1,100 scientific studies presented as platform and poster sessions.
Key science presentations will be presented at four plenary sessions. Among the leading presenters are V.S. Ramachandran, MD, Ph.D, University of California-San Diego, who will speak on "What Neurology Can Tell Us About Human Nature, Synesthesia and the Meaning of Art." Ramachandran is an internationally honored neurologist and researcher who has been featured in a PBS's Nova program which delved into the findings in his book, "Phantoms of the Brain." He is also a trustee for the San Diego Museum of Art and has lectured widely on art. Ramachandran will speak as part of the Presidential Plenary Session on Tues., April 16, from 9-11:30 a.m.
Major General Perry M. Smith, PhD, an expert on bioterrorism, will speak at the Contemporary Clinical Issues Plenary Session on Wed., April 17, beginning at 9 a.m. His talk, "The War Against Terrorism: What to Expect, What You Can Do," is drawn from his years of experience as a 30-year leader with the U.S. Air Force, and as a military analyst for CNN, McNeil-Leher News, and NBC News during the Persian Gulf War.
Stanley Fahn, MD, AAN president, said while neurologists come for continuing medical education through more than 250 educational seminars, workshops and therapy programs offered, "They are also drawn to, and excited by, the science presented at the meeting. It is the largest gathering of neurologists in the world, with the best and brightest presenting their current research."
