CHICAGO (April 4, 2002) -- The American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) will hold its 70th Annual Meeting April 6 to 11, 2002, at the McCormick Place Lakeside Center in Chicago, Illinois. The meeting will host more than 5,000 attendees, with approximately 2,500 medical professionals including neurosurgeons, neurosurgical residents, neuroscience nurses, clinical specialists, physician assistants and allied health professionals.

Neurological surgery is the medical specialty concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of disorders affecting the nervous system, brain, spinal column and spinal cord and includes brain tumors, severe head injuries, stroke, aneurysms and pain management.

The AANS Annual Meeting is the largest gathering of neurosurgeons in the world. The meeting focuses on the latest research and technological advances in the field.

The Scientific Program, which includes 40 practical clinics, 10 general scientific sessions, 125 oral abstract presentations, 540 poster presentations and 650 technical and institutional exhibits (representing approximately 200 companies), begins on Monday, April 6.

Special lectures include: The Richard C. Schneider Lecturer, Patrick J. Kelly, MD, will discuss "Vietnam 1968-1969: A Place and Year like No Other," on Monday, April 8 at 12:25 p.m.; the Hunt Wilson Lecturer Edward R. Laws, MD, will discuss "The Outcome From Surgical Management of Gliomas of the Brain-The Role of Radical Resection," on Tuesday, April 9, at 9:45 a.m.; and on Wednesday, April 10 at 11:15 a.m., the Rhoton Family Lecturer, Richard G. Fessler, MD, will discuss "The 90s Revolution in Spine Surgery: Was the Decade of the Brain" also the "Decade of the Spine?"
