January 28, 2000

The American Journal of Roentgenology (AJR) will go online at noon EST today, making its debut with the January 2000 issue. The American Roentgen Ray Society, publisher of the monthly journal, is celebrating its 100th birthday in 2000 by entering into the online publishing arena.

At the click of a mouse, users can access all AJR articles, including high-quality scalable images, use a powerful search engine to find specific topics, and link to the full text of articles cited in AJR references. The AJR online will be accessible through the ARRS Web site (www.arrs.org) or at http://www.ajronline.org.

The American Journal of Roentgenology, a peer-reviewed journal published since 1906, is the oldest and most respected journal in radiology in the world. It is named after Wilhelm Roentgen, who discovered the X ray in 1895. Lee F. Rogers, M.D. of the Wake Forest University School of Medicine, Winston-Salem, NC, is the current editor in chief of the journal.

The AJR online is being coordinated by HighWire Press at Stanford University, which specializes in producing online journals in medicine and other related fields. According to the College & Research Libraries News, the HighWire site "performs beautifully -- no incidences of down time or slow response to search queries," continuing on to say, "The design of the entire site is clean and presents itself clearly, allowing easy navigation."

A special feature of the HighWire journals online is linkage to Medline through the National Library of Medicine (NLM) for abstract services. These services are provided as a reciprocal arrangement among medical journals and the NLM.

Initially, the AJR online will be open to all without password protection in order to allow users around the globe to experience the valuable content provided by the journal and to contribute to medical research and the practice of radiology worldwide. At a later date the online journal will become an ARRS membership option or a special subscription offer with access by password.

The American Roentgen Ray Society, founded in 1900, is the first and oldest professional society of radiologists in the world. The society has been a forum for progress in radiology since shortly after the discovery of the X ray and is dedicated to the goal of the advancement of medicine through the science of radiology and its allied sciences. The ARRS headquarters is located at 44211 Slatestone Dr., Leesburg, VA 20176-5109. For information on membership, subscriptions, and programs offered by ARRS, call (800) 438-2777.
