Newswise — Journalists are encouraged to cover proceedings of the 30th Annual Scientific Meeting of the American Pain Society, May 19-21 at the Austin Convention Center. APS is the leading multidisciplinary professional organization in the United States dedicated to advancing pain-related research, education, treatment and team-oriented professional practice.

Some 2,000 scientists and clinicians specializing in pain and pain management are expected to attend. Plenary, expert panel and poster sessions cover a wide range of topics on diagnosis, treatment and management of acute and chronic pain conditions. Pain research also is a major focus of the meeting. Many of the nation’s leading pain researchers will present their discoveries in the scientific sessions.

This year’s keynote speaker is Josephine P. Briggs, MD, director, National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine. Dr. Briggs will share her insights on current and promising applications of alternative health practices for successful pain management.

Also, two expert panel sessions will be devoted to medication abuse and how to avoid it and methods for treating pain patients who have substance use disorders. Other topics covered in scientific sessions are novel targets for drug development for migraine and neuropathic pain, pediatric analgesic development and new scientific findings on transdermal delivery of pain medication.
