Newswise — The American Physical Society (APS) and the Universität Würzburg are very pleased to announce jointly that Laurens Molenkamp, Chair for Experimental Physics at Würzburg, has been appointed senior Editor of Physical Review B, the position of leadership for the preeminent international journal in condensed matter and materials physics. Molenkamp replaces Peter Adams, founding editor of the journal, who is stepping down but will remain on staff.
Molenkamp is a Fellow and an Outstanding Referee of the American Physical Society, and is the 2012 recipient of the APS's Oliver E. Buckley Condensed Matter Physics Prize, along with Charles L. Kane and Soucheng Zhang. "We were favored with an outstanding group of candidates," observed Susan Coppersmith (University of Wisconsin, Madison), who chaired the PRB search committee. "Dr. Molenkamp impressed the committee with his scientific eminence, editorial experience, and management ability," she added.
Molenkamp received his PhD in physical chemistry from the University of Groningen, and spent several years with Philips Research Laboratories, before coming to Würzburg as a full professor in 1999. His research interests include quantum transport in nanostructures, semiconductor spintronics, and optical spectroscopy of semiconductors. Molenkamp explains that he is “much honored to become the senior Editor of one of the cornerstone journals of condensed matter physics and looking forward to working with its experienced editorial staff.”
"We were prepared for the possibility of an international Editor," said Gene Sprouse, APS Editor in Chief. "Two other of our senior Editors are based internationally. We know that distance is no longer an impediment to effective editorial management, even of our largest journal. It's an honor that a scientist of Dr. Molenkamp's stature will be leading PRB." Molenkamp's previous editorial experience was with Semiconductor Science and Technology; as a Divisional Associate Editor, Physical Review Letters; and most recently as Editor, EPJ Applied Physics.
