Robert J. Adams, M.S., M.D.

Expertise: Stroke among individuals with sickle cell disease, and stroke prevention and treatment.

Robert Adams is the chair of the executive committee of the Stroke Council of the American Heart Association, and has held many volunteer positions within the American Heart Association and the American Stroke Association. Adams has been a principal investigator on numerous federally-funded stroke studies and has participated in writing committees for guidelines and scientific statements. He is author of more than 200 research articles and book chapters on stroke. In addition, Adams has served as an ad hoc reviewer of several scientific journals including Stroke: Journal of the American Heart Association.

Mark Alberts, M.D.

Expertise: Stroke prevention and treatment, stroke thrombolytic therapy, genetics of stroke, carotid angioplasty, stenting for stroke, and the American Stroke Association's Acute Stroke Treatment Program (a toolkit designed to guide hospitals through a process for establishing primary stroke centers).

A leader in stroke treatment, Mark Alberts has been a member of many committees and boards including the Brain Attack Coalition and the American Heart Association Brain/Stroke Study Group. Author of more than 100 articles and book chapters, Alberts has also served as editor of several scientific journals including serving as genetics section editor of Stroke: Journal of the American Heart Association. He has also presented lectures and abstracts at numerous national and international meetings.

Larry B. Goldstein, M.D.

Expertise: Stroke prevention and treatment, stroke thrombolytic therapy, rehabilitation, the Acute Stroke Treatment Program (a toolkit designed to guide hospitals through a process for establishing primary stroke centers), and Operation Stroke (a grassroots, community-based program implemented by healthcare professionals and civic leaders).

A stroke researcher and clinician, Larry Goldstein has focused his interests on patients with an elevated stroke risk, delivery of stroke-related care and post-stroke recovery. His laboratory work has focused on pharmacological effects on recovery after brain injury. Goldstein has published more than 200 professional articles, chapters and research abstracts. He lectures widely on stroke-related topics at a variety of professional meetings, both in the United States and abroad. He serves as a reviewer for numerous professional journals and has been a member of the writing committees for several American Heart Association scientific statements, including the Secondary Stroke Prevention Guidelines and the Primary Stroke Prevention Guidelines, which he chaired.

Jeffrey Harris, M.D.

Expertise: Stroke among African Americans, Hispanics and women, stroke prevention and treatment, and Stomp Out Stroke (an educational program designed to reach African-Americans in a church setting).

Neurologist Jeff Harris developed and led stroke-screening programs for his community, and organized and led stroke-screening programs for state legislators. He is currently conducting research on stroke medications for African Americans and is board member of the Greater Nashville Area American Heart Association. He has delivered numerous lectures on acute stroke management to the public, the pharmaceutical industry and physicians.

Margaret Kelly-Hayes, Ed.D., R.N., F.A.A.N.

Expertise: Rehabilitation nursing, stroke and outcome measures, stroke disability and the aging population.

Margaret Kelly-Hayes has a bachelor's degree in Nursing, a master's degree in Rehabilitation Nursing and a doctorate in Health Education. Her primary research areas involve the precursors and prognosis of stroke, assessment measures for rehabilitation, and the epidemiology of disability in elderly populations. She was a member of the expert panel that developed the Clinical Practice Guidelines of Post-Stroke Rehabilitation, published by the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research. Kelly-Hayes is the first non-physician elected to the executive committee of the Stroke Council of the American Heart Association. She has authored more than 50 articles on rehabilitation nursing, stroke and outcome measures, and disability as it evolves in an aging community population.

Richard Hughes, M.D.

Expertise: Stroke prevention and treatment, rehabilitation, the American Stroke Association's Train To End Stroke (a marathon team-training program), and Operation Stroke (a grassroots, community-based program implemented by healthcare professionals and civic leaders).

Richard Hughes is a neurologist and associate professor of neurology. He serves on several committees and boards of the American Heart Association, the Stroke Council of the American Heart Association, and the Advisory Board of the American Stroke Association. He has also held many offices including, co-chair of the American Stroke Association's Operation Stroke initiative, and chairman of the American Heart Association's Desert-Mountain Affiliate stroke advisory committee. In addition to his community involvement, Hughes has won numerous awards ranging from Outstanding Teacher of the Year to the 2000 Ginsberg Medical Volunteer of the Year Award of the American Heart Association. He has authored more than 70 articles, book chapters, letters, and abstracts for medical publications and is currently participating in four stroke studies.

Edgar J. Kenton, III, M.D.

Expertise: African Americans and stroke, medications for stroke, stroke diagnosis and prevention, Operation Stroke (a grassroots, community-based program implemented by healthcare professionals and civic leaders), and Stomp Out Stroke (an educational program designed to reach African-Americans in a church setting).

Dr. Kenton is chair of the American Stroke Association Advisory Committee and a member of the executive committee of the American Heart Association's Stroke Council. He is also a member of the board of directors of the Association for Black Cardiologists. He has been a principal investigator or co-principal investigator on several studies of drugs used in the treatment of stroke and has served on the editorial board of Stroke: Journal of the American Heart Association. He has numerous presentations and publications to his credit.

Arthur M. Pancioli, M.D.

Expertise: Stroke emergency treatment and diagnosis, and the American Stroke Association's Acute Stroke Treatment Program (a toolkit designed to guide hospitals through a process for establishing primary stroke centers).

An emergency room physician, Arthur Pancioli's research focuses on stroke interventions. He serves a peer reviewer for numerous scientific journals including Stroke: Journal of the American Heart Association and has written more than 50 journals articles and abstracts. Pancioli has served as a member of the Stroke Advisory Committee of the American Heart Association, and many other volunteer roles with the organization.

Ralph L. Sacco, M.D., M.S.

Expertise: Stroke prevention and treatment, stroke recovery, epidemiology, and stroke in minority populations.

A prominent stroke neurologist and researcher, Ralph Sacco's clinical research activities focus on evaluating the incidence, risk, and survival of patients with stroke. He has a master's degree in Epidemiology and participated in the Framingham Heart Study. He is the principal investigator of the Northern Manhattan Stroke Study, which is designed to study the predictors of stroke in minority populations. He has published extensively in the areas of stroke prevention and stroke recurrence, as well as on the diagnostic assessment of cerebral infarctions, with more than 300 original articles, case reports, book chapters, abstracts and communications to his credit.

Lawrence B. Sadwin, American Heart Association's National Chairman of the BoardExpertise: Medical research for heart disease and stroke, and strategic plans for the American Stroke Association and American Heart Association.

The American Heart Association elected Lawrence B. Sadwin as its national chairman of the board for the 2001 fiscal year beginning July 1, 2001. A high-level marketing executive, Sadwin became involved with the American Heart Association after being diagnosed with heart disease. His own experience, coupled with having lost his father and a very close friend to heart disease motivated him to take action. He has been a senior level volunteer with the American Heart Association for nearly 20 years, serving in management positions at the local, regional, and national levels. A staunch advocate of raising public awareness of heart disease and stroke, his volunteer work also consists of travel and speaking on behalf of the association and heart and stroke survivors. A compelling delivery of his personal story, along with his hard work on behalf of the association, have won him numerous awards for his committed volunteer leadership and service to the organization. Sadwin also represents the association as a member of the Washington, D.C.-based Research America! Organization, dedicated to increasing funding for medical research for heart disease and stroke.
