Newswise — The American Thyroid Association (ATA) is proud to honor James A. Fagin, M.D., of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York, N.Y., with the 2008 Sidney H. Ingbar Distinguished Lectureship Award. Dr. Fagin presented his lecture, "Insights into Thyroid Cancer Pathogenesis: Clinical and Therapeutic Relevance," today at the ATA's 79th Annual Meeting in Chicago, Ill., where he also received the award.

The Ingbar award recognizes outstanding academic achievements in thyroidology, in keeping with the innovation and vision that epitomized Dr. Ingbar's brilliant investigative career. The Ingbar award is conferred upon an established investigator who has made major contributions to thyroid-related research over many years. The award is endowed by donations made in memory of Dr. Ingbar and is supported, in part, by an unrestricted educational grant from Abbott Laboratories.

Dr. Fagin is Chief of the Endocrine Service and a Member of the Human Oncology and Pathogenesis Program at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. He is also Professor of Medicine at Weill Medical College of Cornell University. He was formerly the James Heady Professor of Medicine and Director of the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.

Dr. Fagin obtained his medical degree from the University of Buenos Aires and completed his endocrinology fellowships at the VA Wadsworth and Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. He has had a long-standing interest in the pathogenesis of thyroid neoplasms; his laboratory focuses on thyroid cancer genetics, the development of mouse models to understand the biology of these tumors, and on the identification of specific therapies directed at key oncoproteins that drive the disease.

Dr. Fagin was a member and then chair of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Endocrinology Study Section (1998-2002). In addition to serving on a number of Editorial Boards, he is a former Associate Editor of Endocrinology, former Editor (Americas) for Clinical Endocrinology (Oxford), and the present Editor-in-Chief of Endocrine-Related Cancer.

Dr. Fagin is a member of the American Society of Clinical Investigation and the Association of American Physicians. He was the recipient of the Abbott Thyroid Research Clinical Fellowship Mentor Award of the Endocrine Society and the Merck Prize of the European Thyroid Association.
