Newswise — WASHINGTON - The Board of Directors of the American Psychological Association has named 15 eminent, diverse leaders of the discipline to the search committee for a new chief executive officer of the association.

The committee is co-chaired by the 2016 President-Elect Antonio E. Puente, PhD, and Rodney L. Lowman, PhD, ABAP, past chair of the association’s Council Leadership Team. Puente is a professor in the department of psychology at the University of North Carolina-Wilmington, and Lowman is a psychology professor at Alliant International University, San Diego, and president, Lowman & Richardson/Consulting Psychologists.

“This panel represents the diversity of the discipline of psychology, in terms of work setting, career stage, ethnic and racial background and expertise,” said APA 2016 President Susan H. McDaniel, PhD. “The selection process was thorough and methodical, and was based on a matrix of qualifications.”

The next steps in the process are to finalize the choice of an executive search firm, which will develop a detailed job description and then solicit and vet candidates, McDaniel said. “The search committee will select the top candidates for review by the Board of Directors,” she said. “The Board’s choice for CEO will then be reviewed and confirmed by the governing Council of Representatives.”

The person who is chosen will become the 11th CEO in the association’s 124-year history. The previous CEO, Norman B. Anderson, PhD, retired Dec. 31, 2015. Cynthia D. Belar, PhD, was named interim CEO in January.
