American Psychiatric Association 153rd Annual Meeting Set for Chicago, May 13-18

Over one thousand clinical papers, poster sessions, symposia, debates, lectures and films and videos to be presented at the American Psychiatric Association (APA) Annual Meeting will focus on "The Doctor-Patient Relationship" and will explore the most recent studies and findings concerning the psychiatric diagnosis and treatment, and the causes of mental illnesses.

Scheduled for May 13 through 18 at the McCormick Place Convention Center in Chicago, the APA meeting features:

-- More than 500 New Research Poster Sessions on the latest research on brain diseases, with a special section on the work of young investigators;

-- 103 symposia on topics ranging from psychiatric medical ethics to violence in the schools;

-- 109 debates and lectures on developing and controversial issues;

-- 109 paper presentations on clinical experiences;

-- A special National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism track focusing on alcohol research;

-- And more (films, videos, exhibits, roundtables, and discussion groups).

Press briefings sponsored by the APA and affiliated and allied organizations will preview these sessions and will be held throughout the day, Monday through Wednesday, May 15 through 17, beginning at 9:00 a.m. each morning. Lunchtime media opportunities with APA leaders and officers also are scheduled for Monday through Wednesday, and an "after hours" reception with APA media spokespersons will be held prior to the APA annual Convocation on Monday evening, May 15. A complete schedule of briefings and media opportunities will be available in mid-April.

The APA Annual Meeting Communications Center/Press Room will open on-site at McCormick Place Convention Center in Chicago at 12:00 noon Saturday, May 13, and close at 12:00 noon on Thursday, May 18. Throughout the meeting the Press Room will open each morning at 8:00 a.m. and close each evening at 6:00 p.m.--with the exception of the Saturday late opening and the Thursday early closing. Press credentials will be issued to advance and on-site registered press beginning at 12:00 noon, Saturday, May 13.

Media registration for the meeting is complimentary to all credentialed members of the working press. All Annual Meeting sessions are open to registered media except Continuing Medical Education (CME) Courses, the annual Business Meeting, and Clinical and Continuous Case Conferences.
