Speakout: "Are Power Lines Unsafe?"

Embargo date: 5:00 p.m. EST, 26 June 2000

IEEE Spectrum, July 2000

Would you let your children go to a school situated near high-voltage transmission lines? Engineer and IEEE Spectrum author J. Robert Ashley wouldn't. The magnetic fields generated by those lines have been the subject of years of controversial research. But the fields he's worried about are electric, not magnetic. Ashley is asking those who have studied the link between power lines and cancer to go back to their original data, and take another look. He thinks they were studying the wrong thing.
