Newswise — CHICAGO – Oct. 14, 2015 – The American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA), today announced the selection of Evan Kharasch, M.D., Ph.D., as new editor-in-chief of Anesthesiology, the official medical journal of the ASA. Founded in 1940, Anesthesiology is a world leader in the publication of peer-reviewed novel research in anesthesiology. Dr. Kharasch will assume the role of editor-in-chief elect on January 1, 2016 and officially take on full editorial responsibility as editor-in-chief of Anesthesiology on July 1, 2016.

Abenstein, M.S.E.E, M.D. “His academic and scientific background, along with editorial expertise, will undoubtedly continue to grow the journal’s impact in all areas of anesthesiology, including perioperative, critical care and pain medicine.”

During his career, Dr. Kharasch has served in several leadership roles, most recently as vice chancellor for research at Washington University. Dr. Kharasch is a professor in the Department of Anesthesiology and director of the Division of Clinical and Translational Research at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. He is also a practicing physician anesthesiologist at Barnes-Jewish Hospital (BJH) in St. Louis and a researcher at the Siteman Cancer Center at BJH. Dr. Kharasch serves as vice-chair for grants and on the Executive Committee of the Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research (FAER) He is also a member of and chairs the ASA Committee on Research. Dr. Kharasch is an elected member of the National Academy of Medicine (formerly the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences).
Dr. Kharasch is an academic anesthesiologist and physician scientist, whose research focuses on clinical pharmacology, drug metabolism and drug interactions. He has published more than 235 peer-reviewed manuscripts, several book chapters, and was co-editor of two pioneering, comprehensive textbooks on anesthetic pharmacology. Dr. Kharasch received his medical degree and Ph.D. in pharmacology at Northwestern University in Chicago. He completed his residency training at the University of Washington in Seattle where he remained on faculty for 18 years, ultimately achieving the rank of professor, vice chair of the Anesthesiology Department and assistant dean of the School of Medicine.
Dr. Kharasch’s has received the 2011 ASA Excellence in Research Award and delivered the 2014 John W. Severinghaus Lecture on Translational Science at the ANESTHESIOLOGY® annual meeting.
Dr. Kharasch served as associate editor of Anesthesiology from 1995-2000 and editor from 2000 to 2009. As editor-in-chief, he will replace James C. Eisenach, M.D., who has served as the journal’s editor-in-chief for the past 10 years.
