Newswise — The American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology is pleased to announce the results of the recent election for open positions on the Board of Directors and Nominating Committee.

"Having good leadership in place is the lifeblood of an organization like ASTRO," said Theodore S. Lawrence, M.D., Ph.D., ASTRO Chair. "The presence of these individuals will make the Society stronger and bring us closer to achieving the goals we've set forth of improving cancer care through education and research."

The new officers for 2006 are:President-elect: Louis Harrison, M.D., Continuum Cancer Centers of New York, New York.Dr. Harrison is currently the Clinical Director of the Continuum Cancer Centers of New York, which includes Beth Israel Medical Center, St. Luke's " Roosevelt Hospital Center, the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary, and the Long Island College Hospital. In addition, he is Co-director of the Institute for Head and Neck Cancer and a Professor of Radiation Oncology at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York. Dr. Harrison has volunteered extensive time to ASTRO, serving as Chair of the Communications Committee and Vice-chair of the Constitution and Bylaws Committee.

Healthcare Economics Vice-chair: Louis Potters, M.D., South Nassau Communities Hospital, Oceanside, N.Y.Dr. Potters is the Associate Director of the Department of Radiation Oncology at South Nassau Communities Hospital in addition to being the Medical Director of the New York Prostate Institute. He is well-versed in healthcare economics issues, currently serving as Joint Economics Committee Co-chair and has been active as a member of several healthcare economics-related committees, including the Government Relations Committee and Technology Assessment Taskforce. He also chaired the Regulatory Subcommittee for five years.

Research Council Vice-chair: Richard P. Hill, Ph.D., University of Toronto, Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Dr. Hill has devoted his professional career to academics and research and is a Professor in both the Department of Medical Biophysics and Department of Radiation Oncology at University of Toronto. He has served on the ASTRO Cancer and Radiation Biology Committee since 2002.

In addition to these Board of Directors positions, ASTRO members elected representatives to the Nominating Committee: Academic: Larry E. Kun, M.D., Member and Chair of the Department of Radiological Sciences at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tenn., and Peter M. Mauch, M.D., a radiation oncologist at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston and a Professor in the Department of Radiation Oncology at Harvard Medical School.

Community Practice: Francine E. Halberg, M.D., a radiation oncologist at Marin General Hospital in Greenbrae, Calif., and Daniel Petereit, M.D., an Associate Professor at the University of South Dakota Medical School in Vermillion, S.D.

Biology: Sara Rockwell, Ph.D., Director of the Office of Scientific Affairs at the Yale University School of Medicine in New Haven, Conn.

Physics: George T.Y. Chen, Ph.D., Head of the Radiation Physics Division in the Department of Radiation Oncology at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston and a Professor in the Department of Radiation Oncology at Harvard Medical School. These new officers will begin their terms during ASTRO's 47th Annual Meeting in Denver to be held October 16-20, 2005. Photos of these leaders are available in an electronic format.
