Newswise — The American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology is pleased to announce that one of its members, David H. Hussey, M.D., F.A.C.R., has been elected president of the Radiological Society of North America for 2005.

Dr. Hussey is a clinical professor in the department of radiation oncology at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio. He served as president of ASTRO in 2000, and he is currently active in ASTRO's History and Maintenance of Certification Committees.

"I look forward to serving both radiation oncologists and diagnostic radiologists and working to bring the two specialties closer together," Dr. Hussey said. "In recent years, diagnostic radiologists have developed more sophisticated ways of delineating tumors, and radiation oncologists have developed more sophisticated ways of delivering treatment to a localized area. As a result, radiation oncologists rely more on diagnostic radiologists than they have in the past, and diagnostic radiologists must have a better understanding of what radiation oncologists need to know."

Dr. Hussey is a graduate of the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, and he trained in radiation oncology at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Hospital and Tumor Institute. He was subsequently on the faculty at M.D. Anderson Hospital and the University of Iowa.

Dr. Hussey will serve a one year term as president.

ASTRO is the largest radiation oncology society in the world, with more than 8,000 members who specialize in treating patients with radiation therapies. As a leading organization in radiation oncology, biology and physics, the Society is dedicated to the advancement of the practice of radiation oncology by promoting excellence in patient care, providing opportunities for educational and professional development, promoting research and disseminating research results and representing radiation oncology in a rapidly evolving socioeconomic healthcare environment.
