Communication Department Founder Honored as Exemplar of Free Speech, Ethics

Herbert I. Schiller, professor emeritus and founder of the Communication Department at the University of California, San Diego, is the 1999 recipient of the Professional Freedom and Responsibility Award of the Qualitative Studies Division of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC). The Qualitative Studies Division is concerned with cultural and historical issues, feminist scholarship, news analysis, political economy, literary analysis, philosophy of communication ethics, and media criticism.

The AEJMC was founded in 1912 and has more than 3,300 members including journalism and mass communication educators from institutions of higher learning as well as media professionals in print journalism, broadcast journalism, advertising and public relations.
