Communication Department Founder Honored as Exemplar of Free Speech, Ethics
Herbert I. Schiller, professor emeritus and founder of the Communication Department at the University of California, San Diego, is the 1999 recipient of the Professional Freedom and Responsibility Award of the Qualitative Studies Division of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC). The award recognizes those who have been exemplars of free speech, ethics, media criticism and accountability.
Schiller's books, according to Qualitative Studies Division head Ana C. Garner, "reflect the concerns of our division" and make Schiller "an outstanding recipient for our award." The Qualitative Studies Division is concerned with cultural and historical issues, feminist scholarship, news analysis, political economy, literary analysis, philosophy of communication ethics, and media criticism.
The AEJMC was founded in 1912 and has more than 3,300 members including journalism and mass communication educators from institutions of higher learning as well as media professionals in print journalism, broadcast journalism, advertising and public relations.
Schiller is considered one of the pioneers of communication study. He has been on the UCSD faculty since 1970 when he established the Communication Department. He received his master's degree from Columbia University and his doctorate from New York University.
Communication Expert Appointed University Professor
Michael Cole, UCSD professor of communication, has been appointed University Professor by the UC Board of Regents.
The title University Professor is reserved for scholars of international distinction who are recognized and respected teachers of exceptional ability, according to UC President Richard C. Atkinson. "This action reflects the high esteem in which (Cole) is held by colleagues, University administration, and the members of the Board of Regents," Atkinson said.
Cole has been on the UCSD faculty since 1978. He received a bachelor's degree from UCLA and a doctorate from Indiana University, both in psychology.
Sociologist Elected to Membership in Sociological Research Association
Chandra Mukerji, UCSD professor of sociology and communication, has been elected to membership in the Sociological Research Association (SRA) which recognizes and honors sociologists for their outstanding research and scholarship.
The SRA was founded in 1936 and has approximately 380 members. Mukerji is one of 13 new members elected this year. She has been on the UCSD faculty since 1975. Mukerji received her master's and doctorate degrees from Northwestern University.
Sociology Professor Named Faculty Research Lecturer
Sociology Professor Steven Shapin has been selected a recipient of this year's Faculty Research Lecturer Award by the San Diego Division of the UC Academic Senate. The award recognizes Shapin's outstanding commitment to research. He will receive the award next spring and present a lecture on a topic to be announced.
Shapin was selected from professors in the Arts/Humanities/Social Sciences. He received his master's and doctorate degrees in history and sociology of science from the University of Pennsylvania and has been on the UCSD faculty since 1989.
Film Producer/Director Commended for Latin American Film
Communication Professor Dee Dee Halleck has received the 1999 American Anthropological Film Festival Award of Commendation for The Gringo in MaÃ’ana-Land: A Musical which she produced and directed.
A filmmaker and media activist, Halleck is an advocate for alternative media. Her film productions have dealt with a variety of issues including Latin American cinema, children, the media and community art. She has been on the UCSD faculty since 1986.
Communication Professor Gives Presentation at the White House
At the invitation of Hillary Rodham Clinton, UCSD Associate Professor of Communication Olga Vasquez attended a special panel on Hispanic Youth and Children held last August at the White House. Vasquez presented information on La Clase M*gica, an innovative bilingual and bicultural program designed to increase the number of UC-eligible Latino students.
La Clase M*gica provides a place for bilingual children to gather after school hours to learn to read and write and pick up basic
computer skills using first and second languages.
Vasquez received her doctorate from Stanford University and has been on the UCSD faculty since 1991.
Sociologist Wins Book Prize
Adrian Johns, assistant professor of sociology, has received the Louis Gottschalk Prize from the American Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies for his book, The Nature of the Book.
Johns joined the UCSD faculty in 1998. He received his doctorate degree from Cambridge University in England.
Sociology Professor Receives NEH Fellowship
Jeffrey Haydu, associate professor of sociology, has received a National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship for University Teachers for the 1999-2000 academic year.
Haydu has been on the UCSD faculty since 1989. He received his master's and doctorate degrees in sociology from UC Berkeley.
