Morris County Resident also named Biomedical Informatics and Computational Imaging leader at Institute

Newswise — New Brunswick, N.J., June 3, 2013 – David J. Foran, PhD, a Long Valley resident, has been appointed Chief Informatics Officer and Executive Director of Biomedical Informatics and Computational Imaging for The Cancer Institute of New Jersey. Dr. Foran will oversee the Institute’s Information, Science and Technology (IS&T) Department as well as its Bioinformatics Program. He was recently named to the position by Cancer Institute of New Jersey Director Robert S. DiPaola, MD.

Dr. Foran also serves as the director of the Center for Biomedical Imaging, is co-director of the Histopathology and Imaging Shared Resource and is a professor of pathology and laboratory medicine and radiology at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. He first joined The Cancer Institute of New Jersey as a member in 2003 and became a resident-member in July 2006.

A major concentration for Foran’s laboratory has been the development of a family of high-throughput, imaging, data-mining and computational tools for classifying malignancies and stratifying biomarker expression signatures from disease onset throughout progression. He has served as the lead investigator for several large-scale inter-institutional research projects in bioinformatics, computational imaging, high-performance computing and integrative diagnostics. This work has resulted in competitive extramural funding from the Whitaker Foundation, the New Jersey Commission on Science and Technology, the federal Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), the Department of Defense, the Radiological Society of North America, the National Institutes of Health and the private sector.

“Biomedical informatics has become a critical component of cancer research. The Cancer Institute of New Jersey has been fortunate to have Dr. Foran’s expertise in this area over the past decade,” noted Dr. DiPaola, a professor of medicine at UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. “I have every confidence that coupled with this vast experience, Dr. Foran’s leadership of these programs will enable numerous research disciplines at The Cancer Institute of New Jersey to flourish, helping to bring cutting-edge cancer discoveries to life.”

Foran was appointed as a charter member on the Biomedical Computing and Health Informatics (BCHI) study section at the National Institutes of Health and currently serves as a reviewer for the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering. He also serves as a consultant to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA); an associate editor for the journal Cancer Informatics; an associate editor for the Journal of Pathology Informatics; and a reviewer for the American Medical Informatics Association; BMC Cancer; Archives in Pathology and Laboratory Medicine; the IEEE Transactions on Information Technology in Biomedicine; and the IEEE Transactions on Medical Imaging.
