MASTER THE "BODY BASICS" TO BECOME A TEAM ANTIOXIDANTS SUPERHERO

--In Celebration of National Nutrition Month, Freshstarts.com Launches Body Basics Quiz to Educate Consumers about the Health Benefits of antioxidants--

MT. OLIVE, NJ - March 3, 2000 - Which antioxidants are associated with a healthy heart? Which may help boost the body's natural defenses against the sun? To obtain the answers to these questions about the benefits of antioxidants, Internet users can now visit http://www.freshstarts.com to take the just-launched Body Basics quiz. Guided by the cartooned members of Team AntioxidantSM, the Body Basics quiz enables parents, teachers and children to test their nutrition IQ and learn how vitamin C, vitamin E and the carotenoids (beta-carotene, lutein and lycopene) impact different parts of the body. Both the Body Basics quiz and freshstarts.com were created by BASF Corporation.

"Body Basics is a creative addition to the educational tools currently available on freshstarts.com," says Jerald Newberry, Executive Director of the National Education Association Health Information Network. "Teachers can now use the Body Basics quiz in the classroom to demonstrate which antioxidants the body needs to prevent specific diseases and why incorporating antioxidant-rich foods and supplements in the diet can help students achieve and maintain optimal health."

Whenever visitors to the site click on a section of the Body Basics illustration, a multiple-choice question appears that highlights the health benefit of a particular antioxidant for that body part. The questions focus on how antioxidant nutrients promote optimal health and prevent diseases in parts of the body including the eye, brain, chest, heart, skin, lower abdominal region and immune system.

After 10 questions are answered, a pop-up box with a score will automatically appear to evaluate the user's nutrition IQ. For example, if four or fewer questions are answered correctly, it will prompt the user to become more familiar with antioxidant vitamins, which foods contain them and how they help the body. Then the user is given the opportunity to learn this information by retaking the quiz. Questions vary, so there are several chances for the user to boost his or her nutrition IQ. And, on the other end of the scale, for answering nine or 10 questions accurately, the user is deemed a Team Antioxidant superhero charged with teaching others about the advantages of including antioxidants in the diet.

The Body Basics quiz can be found in the Vitamins in the House section of freshstarts.com. This section also contains a "virtual kitchen" that provides parents with delicious and nutritious recipes to help the entire family optimize their health through a diet rich in antioxidant nutrients. Parents can take a peek inside the interactive refrigerator and pantry to find out which of their favorite foods contain antioxidants.

Fresh Starts also contains two additional sections:

Vitamins Are Elementary

This area of freshstarts.com provides teachers with five educational and enjoyable lesson plans to help bring proper nutrition to the classroom.

Vitamin Cool Tools

The vitamin superheroes, Team Antioxidant, use a number of engaging activities, including an interactive coloring book and word search games to show kids that learning about proper nutrition can be fun.

The members of Team Antioxidant represent vitamins C, E and the carotenoids (beta-carotene, lutein and lycopene). These antioxidants can be found in fruits and vegetables and have been shown to protect cells from damaging free radicals that can lead to serious illnesses, such as lung, prostate and oral cancers, as well as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases.

To learn more about the long-term health benefits of antioxidants, BASF Corporation has developed a Team Antioxidant poster/brochure. For a free copy of this educational poster/brochure, visit http://www.freshstarts.com or send a self-addressed stamped envelope to:
