WHAT: A recent study in Pediatrics, the official journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics, warns of the hazards of portable backyard pools. According to the study they pose similar drowning risks as in-ground pools, but lack the security.

“The importance of supervision can’t be overstated. Serious injuries and even death can happen so quickly. Most drowning incidents happen when a child has been out of a parent’s sight for less than 5 minutes,” said Dr. Tony Pangan, assistant professor of pediatrics at Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine.

Dr. Pangan is available to comment on how to keep kids safe, especially near water.
