Newswise — CIMIT, the Boston-based Center for Integration of Medicine and Innovative Technology, is pleased to announce that its first international affiliate recently launched in Manchester, UK.
The organization is MIMIT (Manchester: Integrating Medicine and Innovative Technology). It will draw together clinicians and scientists from a group of Greater Manchester hospitals, clinical practices and the University of Manchester for major collaborations to apply the latest technology to medical problems and transform healthcare in the UK.
CIMIT's mission is to improve patient care by facilitating collaboration among scientists, engineers and clinicians to catalyze the discovery, development and implementation of innovative technologies, emphasizing minimally invasive approaches.
When the Manchester group discovered CIMIT and showed an interest in the success of its activities, CIMIT extended its cooperation and entered an agreement because "thoughtful relationships with consortiums outside Boston who share a similar vision and mission will add value to CIMIT in Boston, and that these relationships increase the power of interdisciplinary collaboration to make a difference in patient care."
CIMIT is a consortium made up of non-profit medical and engineering institutions. Members of the CIMIT consortium are Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Boston Medical Center, Boston University, Brigham and Women's Hospital, Charles Stark Draper Laboratory, Children's Hospital Boston, Harvard Medical School, Massachusetts General Hospital, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Newton-Wellesley Hospital and Partners HealthCare System.
MIMIT will involve researchers at the University of Manchester, Central Manchester and Manchester Children's Hospitals NHS Trust, Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trusts, Christie Hospital NHS Trust, University Hospital of South Manchester NHS Foundation Trust, Manchester Mental Health and Social Care Trust, and Salford Primary Care Trust.
John A. Parrish, MD, director CIMIT, said, "Clinicians are constantly attempting to improve the practice of medicine, yet often are unaware of solutions that might exist outside their field. The challenge is to bring scientists and clinicians together to create the right environment with the right resources to work quickly to adapt existing or develop new technologies to improve clinical care and outcome. I am confident that will happen with MIMIT."

The city has both an eminent and dynamic clinical profession and a strong and distinguished community of engineers and scientists. MIMIT has the backing of numerous area institutions, and will receive financial support from Manchester Knowledge Capital/NESTA to cover costs in its first year. NESTA is the National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts.
