Newswise — Clarkson University’s Institute for a Sustainable Environment has created a unique educational opportunity to live and learn in the Adirondack Park.
This fall, the “Adirondack Semester” will host Clarkson students from diverse subject backgrounds as they immerse themselves in an interdisciplinary, academically rigorous, experiential and thought-provoking curriculum.
Students will learn through lecture, discussion and experimental field work during a 15-credit curriculum tailored to the individual through an overarching integrated project concentrated in the student’s major.
Courses will be taught by Clarkson faculty, who are involved in nationally recognized research activities involving the Adirondack region.
The curriculum and the integrated project will equip students with insight, evaluative understanding and the skills necessary to design and present a white paper offering real-world solutions to the park’s complex political, economic, cultural and environmental issues.
“The Adirondack Park is a fascinating laboratory to stimulate learning about diverse economic, environmental, and social issues across disciplines,” says Program Director Michael Dinan. “The Adirondack Semester will be a once in a lifetime opportunity for a limited number of Clarkson students to work hard, play hard, reach higher and gain a greater understanding of our world moving forward with sustainability as a guiding principle.”
The park has been referred to as the “Eden of restoration” by author, environmentalist, and former resident Bill McKibben. It is a living experiment in sustainability, where nature, people and policy have come together in the largest protected area in the contiguous United States.
