Newswise — March 21, 2012 – Warrendale, PA – Colorado School of Mines walked away with the first place trophy after defeating the University of Florida during the TMS 2012 Materials Bowl science knowledge competition held recently at The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS) 141st Annual Meeting & Exhibition in Walt Disney World, Orlando, Florida.

The game show-styled knowledge contest pitted students from eight universities in four eliminations rounds and two semifinals to determine the championship contenders. Students answered both individual and team questions based on diverse areas of materials science and engineering. This was the sixth year for the TMS Materials Bowl competition.

Colorado School of Mines earned their third Materials Bowl victory in four years. The "Orediggers” team also won the competition at TMS 2010 in Seattle, Washington, and at TMS 2009 in San Francisco, California.

"We are really happy to bring the trophy back to the Colorado School of Mines. The long hours of studying paid off,” said Grant Hudish, team captain. Along with his teammates Jordan Shoemaker, Ellen Verkler, and Greg Lehnhoff, the students outscored the University of Florida "Gators" 27-18.

The Gators team consisted of Jack Tilka, team captain, along with Charles Fisher, Archit Nandi, and Frank Sapienza.

The Orediggers earned $500 for their Material Advantage chapter, $250 for each team member, and the Materials Bowl Trophy.

The Gators won $500 for their Material Advantage Chapter.

Other teams participating in the competition were: University of Central Florida, University of Alabama, Georgia Institute of Technology, University of Utah, University of British Columbia, and Washington State University.
