CONGRESS OF NEUROLOGICAL SURGEONS TO HOLD ANNUAL MEETING IN SEATTLE

The Congress of Neurological Surgeons will hold its 48th Annual Meeting October 3-8, 1998, at the Washington State Convention and Trade Center in Seattle, Washington. The scientific conference will bring together more than 2,000 of the country's top neurosurgeons, neurosurgical residents in training, neuroscience nurses, clinical specialists, physician assistants, and other allied health professionals.

Neurosurgery is the medical specialty concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of disorders affecting the nervous system, brain, spinal column and spinal cord and includes brain tumors, severe head injuries, stroke, diseases of the spine, and pain management. At this meeting, leading experts from this growing field will gather to debate the latest advancements in research and patient outcomes.

The scientific program includes 91 scientific papers, 40 practical clinic courses, 429 poster exhibits, and 555 technical and institutional exhibits. Some highlights of the more than 700 presentations will include results of a Phase II clinical trial involving dexanabinol (HU-211), an analog of the active agent in marijuana, in treating severe head injury patients; comparison of disc degeneration, a common cause of low back pain, in men and women; analysis of a morphine epidural paste for painless lumbar surgery; and an examination of the latest technologies, including robotics, image-guided navigational systems, and telemedicine in surgery.

The meeting will begin on Monday, October 5 with a General Scientific Session on "Neurosurgical Localization and Navigation." This is the first of four Scientific Sessions that will address neurological disorders, discuss a broad spectrum of treatment options, examine which surgical procedures are the best for patients and what are the outcomes for those patients.

Also on Monday, John M. Tew, Jr., MD, Medical Director at The Neuroscience Institute, Mayfield Professor and Chair of the University of Cincinnati Department of Neurosurgery, and the Honored Guest Speaker of the 48th Annual Meeting of the CNS, will discuss, "Technical Innovations and Everyday Practice." Dr. Tew will also deliver several presentations throughout the week, including "Therapeutic Carotid Occlusion," "Management Strategies for AVMs," and "Therapeutic Decisions for Facial Pain."

On Wednesday, October 7, Nachshon Knoller, MD, will present the results of a two-year, multi-center, placebo-controlled, randomized trial on the efficacy and safety of dexanabinol (HU-211), an analog of the active agent in marijuana, in treating severe head injured patients.

Throughout the week, subspecialty Sections of The American Association of Neurological Surgeons and Congress of Neurological Surgeons will hold symposiums on specific aspects of neurosurgery including cerebrovascular disease, disorders of the spine and peripheral nerves, neurotrauma and critical care, pain, pediatric neurological surgery, stereotactic and functional neurosurgery, and tumors.

New to this year's meeting is real-time video broadcasts of CNS Scientific Sessions for practicing neurosurgeons, neurosurgical residents in training, clinical specialists, physician assistants, orthopedic surgeons, emergency physicians and other allied health professionals. The live presentations will air Monday, October 5 from 7:30 - 11:45 a.m. PST, and on Tuesday, October 6 from 8:10-11:45 a.m. PST.

Monday's presentations will include "Principals of Surgical Localization," "Technical Innovations and Everyday Practice," and "Dr. Friedman's Presidential Address." Tuesday's broadcasts will include "The Neurosurgeons Role in Triage and Acute Management," "Contemporary Treatment Paradigms -- Spinal Injury," and "Neurosurgeons at the Forefront -- Prevention, Treatment, Research and Legislation."

These presentations, as well as a bevy of other talks, also will be available as archived video files on NEUROSURGERY://ON-CALLÆ.
