WHAT: Celebration of the 30th Anniversary of the National Sea Grant College Program

BACKGROUND: Sea Grant is a marine and Great Lake science issue-oriented program based at universities in all coastal and Great Lakes states. Now in its thirtieth year of operation, the program has been recently reauthorized by Congress with overwhelming bipartisan support. President Clinton is expected to sign the bill by next Monday. Sea Grant funding comes through the Department of Commerce's National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration with matching funds from the states and private industry.

United States Capitol, Washington D.C.

WHO: Members of both houses of Congress, the Directors of the nation's 29 state Sea Grant Programs, special guests will gather for a program marking the 30th anniversary of the start of the nation's premier marine science research program.

PROGRAM / SPEAKERS: Speakers are expected to include Sen. Ted Stevens (R-Alaska), Sen. Ernest F. Hollings (D-SC), Rep. Don Young (R-Alaska), Rep. Jim Saxton (R-NJ), Rep. Frank Pallone (D-NJ), Rep. Sam Farr (D-CA), Sen. Judd Gregg (R-NH) and others.

SPONSOR: This event is being hosted by Sen. Ted Stevens (R-Alaska), and is organized by the Sea Grant Association.
