Newswise — Creighton University joins 19 other colleges and universities in the Student Investment Program sponsored by D.A. Davidson & Co., the largest full-service investment firm based in the Northwest.

Under the program, Davidson & Co. creates an account of $50,000 that the students manage any way the want for one year. The teams pay execution costs and earn interest on cash and dividends on securities. At the end of the school year, each school receives half of any portfolio earnings in excess of 5 percent, less transaction costs. D.A. Davidson absorbs any losses.

Davidson has run this competition for 25 years and limits participation to only 20 institutions. Creighton was recently notified of a rare opening in the program. Randy Jorgensen, Ph.D., associate professor of finance and director of Creighton’s Master of Security Analysis and Portfolio Management program (MASPM) (http://www.creighton.edu/business/graduate/programs/msapm/index.php) said the opportunity is perfectly suited for the Creighton students who will be involved in the program. “The trust that D.A. Davidson has put in our students says a lot about our MASPM program. The investment challenge will provide a value for our students as well as Davidson,” said Jorgensen. “This gives students a chance to put their study of security analysis and portfolio management into practice. It is a natural fit for our MSAPM program and we are excited about getting the chance to participate.” Since the program’s inception in 1985, D.A. Davidson has, through the program, donated almost $375,000 to participating schools. The firm also has provided a hands-on education in finance, stock research, portfolio management and other investment issues to senior-level students at colleges and universities across the Northwest and Rocky Mountain region.

“Twenty-five years ago, we created the Student Investment Program to provide senior-level university business students with hands-on education in portfolio management – particularly relevant experience for future graduates, considering the current investment climate and volatile state of the economy,” said Ian Davidson, chairman of D.A. Davidson & Co. and its parent company, Davidson Companies. “We place a great importance in financial literacy and our Student Investment Program allows university students to collaborate and gain real-world experience, helping them understand the ups and downs of the market.”

The Student Investment Program was launched in 1985 at Montana State University. Besides Creighton, the participating schools include: Boise State University; Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah; Eastern Washington University in Cheney, Wash.; Gonzaga University in Spokane, Wash.; Montana State University-Billings in Montana; Montana State University in Bozeman; Seattle University; University of Idaho in Moscow; University of Montana in Missoula; University of Oregon in Eugene; University of Utah in Salt Lake City; University of Washington in Seattle; University of Wyoming in Laramie; Utah State University in Logan; Washington State University in Pullman; Idaho State University in Pocatello, Idaho; Portland State University; and Westminster College in Salt Lake City, Utah.
