Newswise — A group of distinguished academicians and esteemed practitioners in the realm of international finance, gathered on the grounds of the Darden School of Business to explore the flow of capital around the world as well as international portfolio allocations. On Thursday, March31 and Friday, April 1, invited guests attended the 10th annual International Finance Conference. The theme this year was, "International Capital Allocation."

Carmen M. Reinhart, senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics, served as the keynote speaker. Her talk was called, "Financial Crises, Debt, and Growth: Some Reflections."

Other presenters included:

Patrick McGuire, senior economist at the Bank for International Settlements. He discussed, "Systemic Vulnerabilities"

Stijn Claessens, assistant director in the research department and head of the financial studies division of the International Monetary Fund. He discussed, "Managing Large Capital Inflows: the Role of Macro-Prudential Controls"Jessica Donohue, senior managing director at State Street Global Markets. She discussed, "Investor Behavior and Risk”

Research Presenters Included:

Alexander Popov, economist in the financial research division of the European Central Bank. He presented the research paper, “Financial Liberalization, Growth, and Risk”

Stephan Siegel, professor at the University of Washington Business School. He presented the research paper, “The European Union, the Euro, and Equity Market Integration”

Tarun Ramadorai, reader in Finance at the Saïd Business School at Oxford University. He presented the research paper, “Trade Credit and International Return Comovement”

Neeltje van Horen, senior economist at the Research Department of the Dutch Central Bank and a Researcher at the Economics Department of the University of Amsterdam. She presented the research paper, “Running for the Exit: International Banks and Crisis Transmission”

Emilio Osambela, professor of finance at the Carnegie Mellon Tepper School of Business. He presented the research paper, "Differences of Opinion and International Equity Markets”

Laurent Fresard, professor of finance at HEC Paris. He presented the research paper, “Cross-Listing, Investment Sensitivity to Stock Price and the Learning Hypothesis”

Isil Erel, professor of finance at Ohio State University Fisher College of Business. She presented the research paper, “Determinants of Cross-Border Mergers and Acquisitions”

Kalina Manova, professor of economics at Stanford University. She presented the research paper, “Firm Exports and Multinational Activity Under Credit Constraints”

Mary Margaret Frank, professor at the Darden School of Business. She presented the research paper, “The Effects of the Taxation of Dividends on the Allocation of Foreign Portfolio Investment around the World”

Gwen Yu, professor in the accounting and management unit at Harvard Business School. She presented the research paper, “Accounting Standards and International Portfolio Holdings”

Karl Lins, professor of finance at the University of Utah David Eccles School of Business. He presented the research paper, “Shareholder Voting and Corporate Governance Around the World”

This event was co-hosted with the Review of Financial Studies, in partnership with the International Monetary Fund, World Bank, and the Research Foundation of CFA Institute.
