Newswise — Fiat Chrysler may have to pay the federal government as much as $70 million in penalties for underreporting death and injury claims related to potential defects in the automaker’s cars. Art Wheaton, automotive expert and senior extension associate with Cornell University’s School of Industrial and Labor Relations, says despite Chrysler’s sales improvements, the company’s focus on quality is still falling short.

Wheaton says:
“The Fiat Chrysler penalties for failure to report death and injury claims are a serious issue. Fiat Chrysler has been fined previously for failure to work well with the National Transportation Safety Board and has recalled over 11 million vehicles this year.
“There is a very old dilemma in manufacturing in balancing quality and quantity. As Fiat Chrysler sales have recovered and improved every month for the past four or five years, the emphasis on quality has not been a high enough priority.”
