Don't Buy Art for Christmas

A gift of art for Christmas may be a bad choice in many ways, says Alan Atkinson, Ph.D., UAB Department of Art and Art History. For example, shopping on line is not a good idea.

"You can't tell enough about a work of original art from an Internet photo. If you do shop on line, choose a reputable dealer who will send works on approval or offer you a money-back guarantee. Be aware that some on-line auction houses offer the buyer little or no recourse." He also suggests buying a framing gift certificate instead of art. "Art is a personal taste. If you are shopping for someone who likes art, they probably already have something they would like framed."
