Newswise — The major benefits of exercise accrue from regular workouts, so when cold, rainy weather precludes outdoor participation developing convenient alternatives may prevent lapses in workouts, says Dr. Peter Snell, an associate professor of internal medicine at UT Southwestern.

"The most obvious solution is to join a fitness center such as your local YMCA," Snell said. "Because walking confers benefits, many people also find a friend and walk in malls.

Unless the temperature is very cold, Snell said, rain is not a problem for a person who exercises vigorously.

"Individuals should not be deterred by wet weather as long as there is protection from the wind chill," he said. "When selecting exercise apparel, it is important to pick fabrics that breathe to prevent the build up of high temperatures."
