Newswise — The U.S. Civilian Research & Development Foundation (CRDF) has announced Dr. Edwin Daniel Hirleman, professor and head of the School of Mechanical Engineering at Purdue University, as the recipient of its 2008 George Brown Award for International Scientific Cooperation in recognition of his outstanding commitment to international education and cooperative research. The George Brown Award is CRDF's highest honor, recognizing outstanding individuals for their efforts to promote international science collaboration in the spirit of the late U.S. Congressman George Brown.
Throughout his career, Dr. Hirleman has been active in encouraging cultural and scientific exchanges with engineers and researchers around the globe. As the founder of Purdue University's Global Engineering Program (GEP), Dr. Hirleman has designed international opportunities specifically for engineering students and professionals, and has established programs to help integrate global concepts into their work.
"He has developed an unprecedented global engineering program for undergraduates," says Leah Jameson, Dean of Engineering at Purdue University, Hirleman's nominator for the award. "He has actively encouraged faculty members to conduct internationally cooperative research, and he has provided extensive leadership to professional organizations dedicated to global education."
Through GEP, Dr. Hirleman established the Global Engineering Alliance for Research and Education (GEARE), which combines international study with opportunities for internships and collaborative research. He is also working to develop GlobalHUB, an NSF-funded Engineering Virtual Organization that enables students, faculty, and researchers to use a wide array of open-source software to collaborate on international team design projects, facilitate exchange programs and advance engineering education research.
The George Brown Award, now in its fourth year, has previously been awarded to Dr. Zafra Lerman, Dr. Brian Tucker, Dr. King K. Holmes, Dr. John H. "Jack" Gibbons and Dr. Yuri Ossipyan. The 2008 George Brown Award will be presented to Dr. Hirleman on September 9, 2008 in Washington, DC.
