Newswise — University of Utah professor of education Amy Bergerson is available to discuss ways students can prepare for success in college.

Across the country, there is an increase in the number of college students working while going to school to avoid increased student loan debt. These busy students don’t have time for traditional, extra-curricular activities, which are known to increase retention and improve graduation rates.

While traditional clubs, intramural sports and student government are still important, busy, working students need new options for involvement to help them connect to their campuses.

Bergerson notes that for this new generation of students, looking to the classroom for social experiences is key. Many universities offer service-learning classes, undergraduate research opportunities, learning communities and a variety of other academically based student programs that provide social connections to students who don’t have time for separate activities.

Bergerson is an expert on how students make decisions about whether and where to attend college and how universities can help students succeed. She has published numerous journal articles, has given more than 40 academic presentations and is an award-winning teacher. Uplink available.
