WAKE FOREST EXPERT AVAILABLE FOR INTERVIEWS ABOUT GENETIC MAPPING, GENE BIAS

Mark Hall, professor of law and public health at Wake Forest University, is available for interviews about gene mapping and gene bias among insurers and employers.

Hall recently studied seven states with laws restricting health insurers' use of genetic information to make underwriting decisions in a project paid for by the National Institutes of Health. He presented his findings to more than 5,000 scientists from all over the world at the 1999 annual meeting of the American Society of Human Genetics.

Hall's study found that health insurance companies are not currently interested in using genetic testing to decide whom to insure. He believes part of the reason may be that public outcry against such use of genetic information has risen as new mapping technologies have been developed.

Hall is the author of 10 books on health care law and policy, including "Making Medical Spending Decisions" and "Health Care Law and Ethics." His research includes managed care regulation, health care rationing, genetics and insurance, and insurance market reform.

To reach Hall, call 336-758-4476. His email address is [email protected].
