Newswise — The city of Jasper paid a high price for a hate crime three people committed, Baylor researchers say. The city's residents were branded worldwide as racist, despite the fact they banded together to turn away the Ku Klux Klan, which tried to use the crime to gather support, and despite the fact that the victim's family turned away offers by the Black Panthers to seek revenge. Convicted murderer Lawrence Brewer, one of three men convicted in the crime, is scheduled for execution Wednesday. Researchers Cassy Jordan and Mia Moody in Baylor's department of journalism and media arts have interviewed more than a dozen residents who recall the lynching and aftermath.
