Monday, December 4, 3-5:00 p.m.This session will present methods for increasing the availability of pharmacists to perform medication management by shifting operational duties in a pharmacy from clinical pharmacists to certified pharmacy technicians. The presentation will also include the announcement of the winners of the 2000 Innovations in Pharmaceutical Care Awards.

"Errors of Omission: Improving Quality of Care"

Tuesday, December 5, 2-5:00 p.m.The Health Care Financing Administration has set ambitious priorities for improving the quality of care given to Medicare patients undergoing treatment for six disease states. This session will look at the role of peer review organizations in helping to meet these goals and the use of quality improvement guidelines in treating patients with community acquired pneumonia and acute myocardial infarction.

Monday, December 4, 2:30-5:00 p.m.The basic applications of pharmacogenomics and the implications of the Human Genome Project on medical care and clinical pharmacy will be discussed.

Wednesday, December 6, 2-5:00 p.m.This session will delve into the ethical, legal, and social implications arising from advances in genetic technology and the safeguards that should be put in place before these advances are integrated into health care practice.

Tuesday, December 7, 9-11:00 p.m.Representatives from the pharmaceutical industry will discuss how genomics will impact the drug discovery and development process.

Tuesday, December 5, 8-11:00 a.m.A survey of the role of pharmacists in long-term weight management will include discussions on the role weight gain as a side effect of drug therapy may have on patient compliance, treatment options for eating disorders, and the consequences of obesity.
