ISHIB, the International Society on Hypertension in Blacks, Inc today announces the availability of two medical education initiatives, the GlaxoSmithKline / ISHIB Medical Fellowship Program and the GlaxoSmithKline / ISHIB Master Clinicians Program. Nomination deadline is April 28 for both programs.

The GlaxoSmithKline / ISHIB Medical Fellowship Program. This award is designed to assist primary care physicians, and medical fellows and residents to participate in the ISHIB Hypertension Academy - a one day hypertension primer taking place on June 23, 2006 during ISHIB2006. Candidates for this program must be nominated by their residency/fellowship program director or provide service in a federally funded primary care center.

Successful candidates for this award will: 1) have a demonstrated interest in being certified as a hypertension specialist; 2) provide care in an area that serves under-served populations; and 3) agree to participate in ISHIB-related cardiovascular disease research. Recipients will be required to submit an abstract/poster presentation for ISHIB2006, provide a lecture on hypertension within his or her community, and participate in a community-based screening activity sponsored by ISHIB. The award is not restricted to members of ISHIB.

The GlaxoSmithKline / ISHIB Master Clinicians Program.ISHIB will select two recipients to enter the Master Clinicians Program. Recipients will be selected based on criteria including: 1) contributions and inspirational spirit in the work of cardiovascular disease among professional and lay communities; 2) role model, clinical skills, leadership and advocacy efforts; 3) outstanding work to develop new care models; and 4) role in the development of evidence-based quality improvement initiatives.

ISHIB2006 is jointly sponsored by ISHIB and the American Society of Hypertension (ASH). ISHIB (The International Society on Hypertension in Blacks) is a nonprofit, professional medical membership organization devoted to improving the health and life expectancy of ethnic populations. ISHIB was founded in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1986 to respond to the problem of high blood pressure among ethnic populations. Each year, its international interdisciplinary conference presents advancements in the treatment and prevention of cardiovascular diseases and reducing the health disparities among ethnic minority populations. In addition to US conference locations, other sites for the conference have included Toronto, London, the US Virgin Island, Kenya, Cameroon, and Brazil.
