First Feminist Subject Of New Book

A new book by UAB political scientist Wendy-Gunther Canada, Ph.D., "Rebel Writer: Mary Wollstonecraft and Enlightenment Politics" examines the life and political ideology of the 18th century feminist author of "A Vindication of the Rights of Woman." The book was the first systematic argument for women's rights. "Wollstonecraft argued that in an enlightened age, where reason gave men a right to rule themselves, women should also have an education to allow them to govern themselves and manage their households."

Earlier, women had argued that they should be educated but only in order to be better helpmates to their husbands." But Wollstonecraft said women should be educated to help themselves first, then to perform the duties of mothers, but only if allowed to exercise their rights as citizens."
