Fun Family Tradition

Carving a Jack-O-Lantern with your children is a fun tradition that teaches creativity and knife safety, says Alan Atkinson, Ph.D., self-proclaimed "professor of pumpkinology" and professor in the UAB Department of Art and Art History. "It's a great opportunity to encourage imagination in kids. Let them carve their own -- with adult supervision, of course." Use crayons to draw a design on the pumpkin, then use a sharp knife. Cut a preliminary line first, then cut all the way through. "Let them chop at it, scar it - the only 'oops' you should worry about is cutting fingers," said Atkinson. "It's just a squash." "There's nothing like taking that youngster's pumpkin on the front porch and putting a candle in it the first time."
