Galileo swoops by Jupiter's volcanic moon Io
This morning NASA's Galileo spacecraft scored another daring success by completing the closest-ever flyby of Io. The probe dipped to only 199 kilometers above the moon's fiery surface -- roughly the distance between Los Angeles and San Diego and less than the height of some of Io's high-flying volcanic plumes.
