Newswise — DANVILLE, Pa. – Leaders of Geisinger Health System’s ProvenCare® Lung Cancer program have partnered with health care providers across the country in an effort to replicate the program’s effectiveness with treating lung cancer patients.

Modeled after other successful ProvenCare programs, which have been shown to improve quality and lower costs, ProvenCare Lung Cancer is being piloted at five non-Geisinger sites in partnership with the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer. The collaborative is highlighted in CA: A Cancer Journal for Clinicians, a peer-reviewed journal of the American Cancer Society.

Each year, more Americans die from lung cancer than from breast, prostate, colorectal, and ovarian cancers combined.

“Our ProvenCare programs have shown that the principles of reliability science, facilitated by a robust electronic health record and institutional commitment, allow the re-engineering of complicated clinical processes,” said study author Matthew Facktor, M.D., thoracic surgeon, Geisinger Health System. “This eliminates unwarranted variation and promotes reliable delivery of evidence-based elements of care. With this collaborative, we’re now working to establish that ProvenCare can be generalized to other institutions.”

The partner institutions are:

Duke Raleigh Hospital, Raleigh, N.C. Geisinger Health System, Danville, Pa. Kern Medical Center, Bakersfield, Calif. NorthShore University Health System, Evanston, Ill. Northwestern University Medical Center, Chicago, Ill. University of Washington Medical Center, Seattle, Wash.

Objectives of the collaborative include:

Decreasing complication and mortality rates. Increasing process efficiency. Increasing proficiency in providing evidence-based care. Eliminating unwarranted variation of care by all staff.

‘‘It’s important to work on this now because lung cancer is the number one cancer killer of females and males in the U.S.,” said David P. Winchester, M.D., FACS, medical director, Cancer Programs, American College of Surgeons. “Surgical resection offers the only cure after diagnosis, and this multi-institutional collaborative is examining ways to improve care processes and quality of life for patients.”
