Newswise — San Francisco, CA – March 3, 2015: The Glaucoma Research Foundation honored Adrienne Graves PhD, Nobel Laureate Shinya Yamanaka, MD, PhD and Masayo Takahashi, MD, PhD, at the Glaucoma 360 Annual Gala on February 5, 2015 at San Francisco’s historic Palace Hotel. The event, now in its ninth year, raised more than $500,000 to support Glaucoma Research Foundation’s research and education programs.
The Catalyst Award was presented to Adrienne L. Graves, PhD in recognition for her outstanding leadership and many contributions to ophthalmology and for her dedicated service on the Glaucoma Research Foundation Board of Directors. Renowned stem-cell researchers Shinya Yamanaka, MD, PhD, 2012 Nobel Laureate, and Masayo Takahashi, MD, PhD, 2014 Stem Cell Person of the Year, received The Visionary Award to honor their pioneering work to improve global healthcare and treat blinding eye disease. Italian tenor Pasquale Esposito closed the night’s festivities with a special musical performance.
Co-chaired by Nobuko Saito Cleary and Gary Cleary, PharmD, PhD, Marguerite McDonald, MD, FACS, and Robert N. Weinreb, MD, the Annual Gala included a reception, silent auction, live auction and dinner to celebrate the scientists who have done so much to help in the fight against glaucoma, the leading cause of irreversible blindness. During the Live Auction, two members of the audience, Oakland resident June Behrendt Otto (GRF Honorary Advisory Board) and Paul Schacknow, MD, PhD, a glaucoma specialist from Palm Beach Gardens Florida, jointly announced a $50,000 match which resulted in raising $170,000 to fund innovative glaucoma research.
The Annual Gala kicked off “Glaucoma 360”, a unique series of three events that included the New Horizons Forum — a full-day meeting dedicated to new innovations in glaucoma — and concluded with a continuing medical education symposium for ophthalmologists.
