Guide Shows How to Make Money with Technology

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, NC -- Research Triangle Institute has produced a guide to help entrepreneurs and small-business managers grow high-tech businesses.

Making Money with Your Technology is based on more than 100 interviews, focus groups, and literature research. NASA's Langley Research Center provided support for the preparation of this guide. It was written to inform and encourage innovators of new technology and to serve as a catalyst for action.

"The guide was driven by one overriding objective: to help businesses turn technology into something that people will buy," says Rick King, project manager. "We used creative methods to get people thinking about new approaches. It's an action-oriented tool that presents the key success factors in running and growing a new technology-based operation, whether as a start-up company or as part of a large organization like RTI."

The book includes a Q&A section with answers from people experienced in building new businesses: entrepreneurs, those who run small companies, consultants, lawyers, corporate managers, accountants, investors, and universities.

"The guide helps readers improve their chances of success by benefiting from the experiences of others -- their successes, mistakes, and lessons learned," Mr. King says.

Making Money with Your Technology was completed as part of RTI's work in supporting small companies funded by NASA. Staff in RTI's Center for Technology Applications (CTA) have worked with NASA on a wide range of technology transfer programs for over 30 years. In addition to producing the guide, RTI also conducts "Making Money With Your Technology" workshops in collaboration with government SBIR programs, business incubators, and state-level entrepreneurial support organizations. The workshops include interactive activities, an extensive workbook, and team problem solving sessions.

RTI offers a range of additional technology transfer services. RTI staff evaluate and market technologies developed by government labs and assist corporations in licensing their nonstrategic intellectual property. Also, they leverage the Institute's technical and industry networks to identify sources of new technology to improve a company's cost savings, market share, or manufacturing processes. In addition, RTI works with SBIR-funded companies to provide market analysis, business development assistance, and access to corporate partners.

Research Triangle Institute is an independent nonprofit organization that serves government and industry clients worldwide. With revenue of over $143 million and a staff of 1, 450, RTI conducts R&D in electronics, physical sciences, engineering, chemistry, life sciences, environmental sciences, social sciences, and applied statistics. RTI was established in 1958 as the cornerstone research center in the Research Triangle Park.
