Newswise — WASHINGTON (August 17, 2011)— Julia Hidalgo, ScD, MSW, MPH, research professor in the Department of Health Policy at the GW School of Public Health and Health Services, served as a guest editor to a special supplement of the peer-reviewed journal, AIDS Patient Care and STDs. The supplement can be accessed at www.liebertpub.com. The supplement focuses on overcoming the challenges unique to young men of color who have sex with men, a growing segment of the HIV-positive population, and evaluated strategies for providing HIV testing, treatment, and retention in care. The supplement presents the innovative outreach and treatment models derived from the “YMSM of Color Initiative,” which is a Special Project of National Significance (SPNS) Initiative of the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) HIV/AIDS Bureau.

Dr. Hidalgo contributed to several articles in the supplement that examined epidemiologic data on young men of color who have sex with men, the roles and challenges of outreach workers in the HIV clinical and support programs that support young men of color who have sex with men, and several other papers presenting results from a multistate study of racial and ethnic minority men who have sex with men, living with HIV. She reports that, “This study represents the largest cohort of HIV-positive young men of color who have sex with men in the US. Our study’s findings will help inform the work of HIV clinical and prevention programs across the U.S.”

The George Washington University served as the technical assistance and evaluation center for the multi-state project and was responsible for conducting the multi-site evaluation.
