WASHINGTON, Aug. 9 /U.S. Newswire/ -- The George Washington University was granted final written approval by the District of Columbia Board of Zoning Adjustment for the construction of a $96 million, 400,000 square foot replacement hospital. The application was originally approved on May 19, 1999; the official order granted August 6.

"Now with the BZA's written approval, we can move forward with obtaining the necessary building permits so that construction can begin," said Phillip S. Schaengold, J.D., hospital chief executive officer. "This new hospital building reaffirms Universal Health Services' commitment to providing District residents with quality health care services."

"We are pleased to move ahead with this project which will allow our tradition of health and medical education to continue in a state-of-the-art facility designed with our patients' needs in mind," said John F. Williams, M.D., vice president for health affairs and executive dean at The George Washington University Medical Center.

An official groundbreaking ceremony will be held in October on the construction site, across 23rd Street from the current facility on land previously used as a parking lot.
