WASHINGTON, Oct. 6 /U.S. Newswire/ -- The George Washington University Hospital, GW University and Universal Health Services, Inc, today held a groundbreaking ceremony for the new $96 million George Washington University Hospital. District of Columbia city council members Jim Graham (Ward 1), and Harold Brazil (At-large), were on hand for the celebration.

"We believe the $96 million investment will benefit the academic medical center and teaching facility, and will enable it to reinforce the hospital's position as the preeminent providers of care to the community," said Alan Miller, UHS chairman and chief executive officer.

Construction will begin in the coming weeks on the 400,000 square foot, six-story facility, which will house 371 beds and employ more than 1,500.

"By building this new hospital, GW enters the new century with its reputation as a first-class academic medical center stronger than ever, delivering top-quality patient care, graduating highly-trained and skilled healthcare professionals and conducting the caliber of research and teaching that will lead to new and better medicine," said Stephen J. Trachtenberg, GW University president.

The new hospital will allow for an expanded emergency room to serve the nearly 45,000 patients seen in the ER each year and larger operating rooms capable of accommodating today's advanced surgical equipment. The majority of the patient rooms will be private, allowing appropriate space for patients and their families as well as physicians and staff.

The main hospital entrance will face 23rd Street directly across from the current building and adjacent to the Foggy Bottom Metro station entrance. The emergency entrance will be south of Washington Circle, between New Hampshire Avenue and 23rd Street.

"This milestone is the result of the great spirit of cooperation, partnership and shared goals that exists among the University, GW Hospital and Universal Health Services," said Phillip S. Schaengold, JD, GW Hospital chief executive officer.
