Newswise — Winter in the Upper Midwest can seem like a challenge, especially when it averages 200 inches of snow each season. But students at Michigan Technological University in Houghton actually celebrate the annual white deluge, and they've even got Nordic ski trails right on campus for students and everyone else to enjoy.

In summer, the 35 kilometers of trails are great for biking, running, and hiking. But they are are nationally recognized for the quality of skiing, consistency of grooming, and variety of terrain. The trail system hosted the 2006 junior national championship, and the 2007 and 2008 U.S. championships. Grooming takes place daily, and the system includes 7.5 kilometers of lighted trails, making an after-class outing a breeze for students, faculty, staff, and community members.

No matter how good the trail system, for a few, cross-country skiing falls flat. Never fear: Michigan Tech students also have unlimited access to the University's downhill facility, Mont Ripley Ski Hill, just a couple miles from campus.
