WHAT:
"Health: A Global Imperative" brings together key players from the international health arena to discuss the critical issues that affect health around the world. The symposium features Carol Bellamy, executive director, UNICEF, who will speak about her organization's perspective on global health. Diane Griffin, Ph.D., professor and chair, Department of Molecular Microbiology and Immunology, Johns Hopkins School of Public Health, will specifically talk about the role that mosquitos play in the transmission and maintenance of infectious disease worldwide. Other key faculty members will discuss various topics including vaccinations and micronutrients.

In addition to the symposium, the School will dedicate the new Becton Dickinson Lecture Hall, which has become the hub of the school's distance learning program, the primary classroom and lecture hall for asynchronous transmission, videotaping, and Internet teaching. BD (Becton Dickinson) is an international leader in the manufacturing of medical supplies and devices and diagnostic systems for use by health care professionals, medical research institutions, industry and the general public. They have recently joined forces with UNICEF in an aggressive plan to eradicate neonatal tetanus. Clateo Castellini, chairman of the board and CEO, and Edward J. Ludwig, president, BD, will participate in the dedication.

The event also marks the inauguration of the Bill and Melinda Gates Institute for Population and Reproductive Health and the opening of the School's new teaching and research building, which was recently completed.
